For those hungry for something new! Introducing the winner of the 11th Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities of 2009! The stage, thrown together with uncertain and irregularly arranged props, creates a dreamy and yet grotesque atmosphere as a metaphor of proximate communication. A superb opportunity to see the most innovative work at the Avignon Festival 2008 in Korea. |
"What we are looking at is not a code that cannot be seen What we should see must be and can be seen with our two eyes."
Have you ever had the opportunity to watch a performance directed by François Tanguy? If not, then here is your chance. And if so, then we know to expect you at the theater! Tanguy was recently awarded the 11th New Theatrical Realities Award at Wroclaw, Poland, in April 2009. Given to young directors who are spearheading new theatrical concepts, the award recognizes Tanguy as one of the best directors in theater today. For some time, Tanguy has been known for his exceptional mise-en-scène that reflects his cosmic perception. His talent was well proven at the 2008 Avignon Festival through his spectacularly ornamented (2007). The title, 'Ricercar', comes from an early music term in Fuga. It is a metaphor for communication through play and the space in which this communication takes place, as well as for the modes of connection with the stage itself. The ability of Tanguy to incorporate the diverse aspects of the arts by bringing together literature, music, dance and contemporary theater in one single vessel is both impressive and marvelous. Through a series of experiments that began prior to, such as non-formal and colorfully unique staging in collaboration with Théâtre du Radeau, Tanguy delivers an explosive sense of catharsis. The glittering moments of this piece draw in and keep the attention of the audience members with force and sensitivity to the end. Ultimately, they are left with an unforgettable experience and sincere appreciation for Tanguy's exceptional creativity.

Once the source of François Tanguy's lyricism is exploited, an endless number of images move along a line of motion, ceaselessly, yet with variation. Objects such as tables, chairs and boxes of various sizes are simply stacked together or intertwined precariously to enlarge the space and the audience's range of vision. The flexible creativity of Tanguy enters a new level of esthetical experimentation when he confronts the musical term of ‘Ricercar', which weaves in and out repeatedly. The sentences and words that slip out of the intertwined and distorted images, the light and darkness that are thrown out and the new voices that emerge even before the previous ones have disappeared come together to create an endless resonance.
This piece explores all of the possibilities of the theatrical mode pursued by the Théâtre du Radeau. The scenes are divided, floated and reorganized continuously and still, somehow, remain undisturbed. The stage, thrown together with uncertain and irregularly arranged props, creates a dreamy and yet grotesque atmosphere. In the midst of such unique staging, we find ourselves wandering through familiar phrases from Bruckner, Kafka, and Berg and the lyrics of Schubert, Kurtack and De Berio. This mixture of numerous voices coming from authors and musicians resonates like innumerable glittering pieces from the arts until reaching an apex when only silence remains to leave its mark. Tanguy has turned the remnants of space into a single solid organism in this piece -a lively performance that stems from the intuitive hallucinations draws forth by ghostly characters. It contains wit and a certain elegance that goes beyond traditional pieces. At the same time, it continues its subtle metamorphosis in contrast with any intellectual approach. is considered by many to be a masterpiece that reflects Tanguy's directorship at its height and the spectacle and artistic elements that he has accumulated over the past two decades. Now, you have the opportunity in Seoul to experience Tanguy's world for yourself and to relish in the sensation of ecstasy that he so generously provides.

- François Tanguy
Francois Tanguy has been director of Théâtre du Radeau since 1982. He has concentrated his efforts in exploring the theatrical potential of modern drama. The outcome of his exploration has been represented on stage in the form of texts and music that have evolved into unique modes of expression and serious works of theatre as a result of his study of impromptu pieces. His work tends to consist of highly precise and sensitive division and reorganization of elements. The obtuse nature of his pieces is elevated to a transcendent beauty that is born out of spectacular staging, lighting and sound effects. He always seeks to encourage the creativity of the actors and comes up with measures to maximize their lyrical and dramatic potential on stage throughout the course of his creation. His most recent pieces include <Les Cantates> (2001), <Coda> (2004) and <Ricercar> (2007). |

Théâtre du Radeau was formed in the city of Le Mans in 1977. Since 1982, Tanguy has worked as the director. Three years after he took over this position, a complex previously used as an automotive plant belonging to Renault on the street of La Fonderie was renovated. In 1992, 'La Fonderie' was established to serve as an arena for activity and creation, work and the meeting of people, experimentation and the arts. As the permanent company at La Fonderie, Theatre du Radeau has staged pieces not only in France but also around the world that combine drama, dance, music, visual art and literature. Since 1977, it has been using tents in its performances. These tents are creative props that have set them apart from other companies. At the same time, they are intended to offer a retreat from ordinary life by suggesting another form of time and space to the audience.

Reviews
"In this piece, which was a highlight of the 2008 Avignon Festival, history and poetry, cabaret and chorus, art and architecture are all invoked in a spiraling stream-of-consciousness traversed by ephemeral figures in sober suits or baroque headdresses, whose measured movements and complex texts, from Dante and Villon to Pound and Kafka, and again to Pirandello and Robert Walser, delivered amidst a polyvalent set of sliding, falling and removable walls, give rise to a slowly accruing meta-reflection (rather than a meta-discourse) on the nature of the theatrical act. (...) The title is the only solid clue to understanding a theater of accumulating visual and aural impressions that build irresistibly into something greater than, but..." - Molly Grogan, Paris Voice, France
"Sous la tente du Théâtre du Radeau, François Tanguy ouvre une nouvelle fois ses puits de poésie. Ricercar, leur dernière création, présentée au festival Mettre en scène, est à l'image des précédentes, un mouvement capturé mais indomptable." - Arnaud Bourgoin, Fluctuate.net, France "C'est de la chair (de la viande, dirait Guyotat) qui est au travail ici, dans son activité de vie et de mort." - Jean-Pierre Siméon, L'humanité, France
