A human screech, much like that from an animal at the slaughterhouse, stemming from the desperation that drama may well be on its way to oblivion. An opportunity to experience the dramatic ingenuity of director, Taesook Han. |
| In drama, reality and fiction are identical terms. This piece is based on Lee Seung-Woo's short novel, The Book at the Slaughter House. The novel alludes to the crisis and fall of literature through an incident that takes place in a space where the boundary between reality and unreality and between reality and fiction has been eroded. At the same time, it is symbolic of the dangers of and destruction brought about by severe attachment and a warped sense of love. In the backdrop of a slaughter house that was once a library, the protagonist, Chunpyeong, and his inner workings are divulged in an incident. Like a priest who beheads a sacrificial lamb, he robs the purity of the librarian for no reason. It is his inner mind that looks back on this side of Chunpyeon. Sadness, love, attachment, deep emotions, and mature mentality, are pushed further inward. The incident makes him turn inward in his reflections. |
Drama is reality and at the same time, fiction - fiction represented as reality. The mind of the person involved in making drama from fiction is serious and full of self-belief. He sometimes accepts fiction as reality and is unsure where lies fiction and where lies reality.
This piece is a statement about the arts; in particular, it is a drama about the attitude and manners of drama-loving humans toward drama. So keep on investigating. What if we put these elements together - the ultra-sensitive protagonist Chunpyeong, dancer, Jung Young-Do who is the inner persona of Chunpyeong, the preciseness of Su Young-Wha, the wit of Park Soo-Young and a young girl by the name of Memory?

| Director |

Director, Han Tae-Sook, is the founder and representative of Theatre Moollee. At present, she is working as a director in drama. Her main principles in aesthetics are to employ drama to unveil the essence of the human inner self and to burrow into the darkest aspects of the human mind.
"Time on Butchery allows me to look into my inner self which have been geared toward the outer existence, the object of extreme attachment. Even if chasing after the object might mean falling off the cliff, getting myself hurt and even dead, I will be able to sing to myself that 'I was able to sacrifice myself for that existence'
- Director/Han Tae-Sook |

Theatre Moollee has placed its objective on expressing in a persuasive manner the theme of life, its source and phenomenon. At the same time, it has been interested in communicating the essence of drama to the contemporary audience. With these goals in mind, director, Han Tae-Sook, established the company to explore new formats and contents, develop experimental cultural contents, and work to train new artists. Theatre Moollee has concentrated on individual performances under a project-base system of operation. Its main goal is to work in partnership with the staff to facilitate the exchange of human resources and to guarantee maximum creativity and artistic integrity.
The year 2008 marked the tenth anniversary of its establishment. As always, Theatre Moollee is determined to continue its work on drama without relying on one single philosophy or single format. Instead it is concentrating on nurturing its spirit of experimentation, which Mooli believes will contribute to the diversity of drama in Korea. |
