Premiered in 1994, Tokyo Notes describes the gradual disintegration of family relations in modern society within the surroundings of an art museum. It is one of the most representative works by Hirata Oriza and the Seinendan Theater Company and has received rave reviews both in Japan and abroad.
Translated into ten languages, Tokyo Notes has been produced by directors worldwide and has been presented in North America, Hong Kong, Australia and Southeast Asia. Overcoming language barriers, it has quickly become a favorite loved by dramatists and the audience alike. The piece was adapted into Seoul Notes by the Park Theater Company in Seoul in the spring of 2003 and received positive critical acclaim.

Well known to the Korean audience for his SCIENCE ON STAGE, Hirata Oriza is the leader of Japanese contemporary drama. He works as a playwright, director, critic and professor. In his "Contemporary Colloquial Theater Theory" he proposes a new technique that calls for placing the subtle, complex and at times, surprising aspects of life on stage. This approach has been influential in contemporary Japanese drama since the 1990s. Hirata has received the prestigious Ginidakunio Award for Drama the Yomiuri Drama Award, the International Drama Critics Association Award and the Asahi Performance Arts Award. |
