The French classics of Cyrano de Bergerac employing the Suzuki method, the training method for actors worldwide! Japanese warriors appear in the French classical comedy to show Europe through the author's eyes. A work that criticizes Japan's so-called 'Western Complex' stemming from interest and admiration of Europe. |
| Suzuki Tadashi has been curious as to why the French classic play of Cyrano de Bergerac has been so popular in Japan for such a long period of time. He has selected a Japanese warrior, Kyojo, to examine Japan's interest in, admiration for and psychological dependence on the West. The personal complex experienced by the talented Bergerac who has a huge nose has been juxtaposed with Japan's Western complex. This work explores the human body and language and raises questions about some of the hardened aspects in Japanese society through three themes - culture, love and desire and language and the body in the East and the West. |
