The protagonists are Suh, the scholar, and Mah, the swordsman. Scholar Suh has taken numerous exams but has failed to pass even once. The two of them have become close friends over the years. One day, the government announces that there will no longer be any exams to select government officials. Both of them face a bleak future. Mah the swordsman only knows how to cut off the heads of other people or slice turnips. Mrs. Mah, upon hearing the news, suggests that her husband set up a restaurant selling meat. Talented Mr. Mah soon becomes one of the best butchers around and has the top business in the area. Poor Mr. Suh who has nothing to do and nowhere to go joins Mr. Mah in the butcher shop. He slowly learns how to slice meat and even enjoy it and decides to apply these skills to studying. In time, the two friends become closer than before...
